Chapter Ten
It was a couple of days later, and I hadnât heard from Charlie. I thought it was strange, considering sheâd been very attentive up until Tuesdayâs dinner. At the same time, I couldnât deny that the distance helped ease the guilt. I hated lying, and seeing as I couldnât come clean, at least not while Tracey and Mark were seeing each other, ending it with Charlie was my only alternative.
When I hadnât heard from her in two days, I half-heartedly hoped that maybe she was phasing me out first so I wouldnât have to. It wasnât until I got a phone call from an unknown number. When I picked up, it was her. She said she was away on business, but her phone charger had stopped working. Any hope I was holding on to of an easy break-up was gone.
We arranged to meet on Friday afternoon at Phoenix Park. I was going to end things and wanted somewhere more neutral than Jerichoâs. Besides, Tracey was working in the coffee shop, and that would lead to questions about why she was there and not in an office.
I decided to walk to the park. It was only thirty minutes away, and I was far too anxious to get behind the wheel. The walk was a little chilly, but I could cope with the cold; it was the darkening clouds above that made me anxious. Break-ups were hard enough without a downpour. Though the greyish clouds matched my mood, and I could take some form of karmic relief in that. After all, Iâd brought this on myself. I should have never started anything with Charlie while I was still sugaring. It was my own fault.
When I arrived, I paced for a few minutes, readying myself. The poor weather meant the park entrance was quiet, so it wasnât difficult to spot her. I also wouldnât have missed the fact that her car was one of the more flash vehicles in the place. The reminder of her lavish lifestyle helped to justify ending things. I rationalised that it wouldnât be long until she found another woman more financially suited to her.
She got out of the driverâs side of a white SUV. I had wondered if she could drive, considering Rob was always chauffeuring her. I was slightly disappointed I wouldnât get to see Rob again. She gave a wave and moved across the road.
Dressed in a raincoat, she was more prepared than me. She wore a dark V-neck shirt with ripped jeans. I wondered how she managed to look effortlessly beautiful in anything she put on. Seeing her again after how weâd left it at her home gave me an anxious clamp in my stomach. It had played on my mind too: the awkwardness after sheâd given me the necklace and my quick transition into sugaring moves. All of it felt orchestrated and wrong, and that was never how me and Charlie interacted.
âHi.â She stopped a little away and gave a hesitant smile.
âHey,â I returned, feeding off her shyness.
